How Often Should You Get A Massage?

One of the most common questions I hear as a licensed massage therapist is:

“How often should I be getting a massage?”

The short answer? It depends on your body and your goals — but most people benefit from massage more often than they think.

Below is a simple guide to help you understand what frequency makes sense for you.

For Pain Relief or Chronic Tension

Recommended: Weekly (temporarily)

If you’re dealing with ongoing pain, recurring tightness, or postural issues, weekly massage for a short period can help your body calm down and reset.

This is especially helpful for:

• Neck and shoulder pain

• Low back discomfort

• Desk-related tension

• Headaches or jaw tightness

Once symptoms improve, many clients transition to bi-weekly or monthly maintenance.

For Athletes & Active Lifestyles

Recommended: Every 2–3 weeks

If you work out regularly, train, or stay very active, massage supports recovery and helps reduce muscle fatigue.

Regular massage can:

• Improve circulation

• Reduce soreness

• Support mobility

• Help prevent injury

Staying consistent — even every few weeks — often leads to better long-term results than occasional sessions.

For Prenatal Care

Recommended: Every 3–4 weeks (or more often as pregnancy progresses)

Prenatal massage can be a valuable part of pregnancy care as the body changes and carries additional physical demand.

Regular prenatal massage can help:

• Relieve low back, hip, and pelvic tension

• Reduce neck and shoulder discomfort

• Support circulation and reduce swelling

• Promote relaxation and improved sleep

Many clients begin with monthly prenatal massage and increase frequency later in pregnancy as discomfort changes.

For Stress Management

Recommended: Every 3–4 weeks

Stress often shows up in the body as tight muscles, shallow breathing, and poor sleep.

Massage helps calm the nervous system and release built-up tension. Many clients find that monthly massage helps them feel more balanced and prevents stress from accumulating.

For General Wellness & Maintenance

Recommended: Once per month

Monthly massage is ideal if your goal is preventative care. It helps you:

• Maintain mobility

• Stay ahead of aches and stiffness

• Support relaxation and circulation

Think of it as routine body maintenance — similar to regular exercise or stretching.

Why Massage Memberships Make a Difference

Massage is most effective when it’s consistent. Memberships are designed to support that consistency.

A massage membership helps you:

• Stay on a regular schedule

• Save compared to single sessions

• Prioritize your body before pain or stress builds up

• Make massage part of your ongoing wellness routine

Many clients notice that when massage is already planned and budgeted for, they feel better overall and are more likely to maintain their progress.

Who Memberships Are Best For

Massage memberships are especially helpful if you:

• Deal with recurring pain or tightness

• Stay active or train regularly

• Carry stress in your body

• Want consistent self-care without overthinking it

Memberships create structure and support long-term results.
